How To Describe Cartoon Hands
So yous draw a peachy drawing character, then you lot get and mess it up by trying and declining miserably to describe the hands.
For me, cartoon easily were ever one of the hardest things to depict on my characters. (That and feet). So that's why I take added an extract from my upcoming tutorial ebook: How To Describe Cartoons (That's the current working title anyway). This section will teach you how to describe hands.
Update: I have also uploaded another How to draw cartoon heads.
Drawing Cartoon Hands
Hands are an essential part of your cartoon graphic symbol. They tin can assist decide moods, hold things, point to places and much more. In that respect, hands are just every bit of import as the face.
Yous can often chronicle your cartoon character'south facial expression to their hands. For example, if your graphic symbol were enraged, they would display a facial expression of gritted teeth and lowered eyebrows, with clenched fists of anger.
On the other hand (no pun intended), your grapheme could accept a grinning on his confront with his thumbs up, suggesting everything is 'okay'.
Easily tin can be fatigued as simple or as circuitous as you similar.
Many drawing characters have three fingers and a pollex for each manus, although Manga-style characters tend to have the full human being form of four fingers and a thumb. There is no exact rule for this though, so draw equally you please. The same goes for thumbnails. Most cartoonists adopt non to depict thumbnails (me for one), simply feel gratuitous to put them in if y'all then choose.
Below are some examples of 3-fingered-hands and 4-fingered-hands.
Four-fingered hands
Tip: Women's easily are longer and more than slender. Sometimes the ends of the fingers are slightly pointier besides.
Below shows dissimilar paw styles used across different types of cartoons. You may recognize some.
How?
The best method for drawing hands is to start off with a elementary cup shape that represents the palm. Side by side, yous build on this by lightly sketching in 'sausage-like' shapes around the circle to represent fingers. Finally, y'all add together in the thumb, just beneath and to the side of the fingers (the side depending on which manus you are drawing).
Once you have completed that, you tin start shaping the easily into a curvier manus-form. Again, sketch this in lightly in case of mistakes. In one case yous are happy with the effect, sketch in the easily properly.
Some other method for drawing hands is to use the stick method, as shown below. Start by drawing a circle this fourth dimension as a guide, and then place your sticks where you want the center of your fingers to be. Then sketch around the sticks and so that it makes up the fingers (and pollex.) In one case complete, sketch it fully.
The final method for cartoon fingers is to apply circles as joints where necessary.
This is the trickiest and most fourth dimension-consuming method, just always delivers the best results if executed correctly.
And so commencement draw your oval shape to represent the palm. Then add together in all the circles which correspond the joints. Ideally your joints will be the aforementioned width as the fingers/ thumbs themselves.
You will besides want to include finger tips as 'joints' otherwise you won't know where the finger ends. Then sketch effectually all the joints to create your hand. Once completed, sketch in fully.
